Technical Description

The HOMECOMING x Nike Air Max Plus "African Sunrise" arrives in a Safety Orange / Bright Mandarin / Black colorway that captures the heat and light of early morning over West Africa. The construction pushes the Air Max Plus well beyond its standard form: the traditional wavy TPU cage has been elevated off the upper, creating a free-standing sculptural overlay that brings the silhouette closer to the Vapormax Plus in character. Beneath it, the mesh has been replaced with a custom tight-knit, almost reptilian texture — directly inspired by the bath sponges (commonly known as African sponges) sold on markets throughout Lagos. The toe box features a darker dipped coating referencing West Africa's long tradition of indigo dyeing. Each pair ships with three sets of multi-color rope laces designed to be woven through each other, along with six co-branded charms: a Homecoming x Nike coin, an Africa-shaped medallion, and cowrie shells — a nod to the historic currency once used across West Africa.

Storytelling

The "African Sunrise" colorway draws directly from the early morning light over the West African coastline — Safety Orange and Bright Mandarin translating the warmth of that specific moment into material form. Designed by Grace Ladoja, founder of the Homecoming Festival, this collaboration marks a historic first: Ladoja becomes the first African woman to design a shoe for Nike. Rooted equally in her Lagos upbringing and her London perspective — she chose the Air Max Plus for its deep meaning within London's sneaker culture — every design decision on this shoe connects to lived experience rather than surface-level reference. The water-resistant coating at the toe box is also a practical nod to Nigeria's rainy season, during which the Homecoming Festival takes place each April.

The HOMECOMING x Nike Air Max Plus "African Sunrise" first dropped April 4, 2026, exclusively at the Homecoming Concept Space in Lagos during the annual festival. A wider release via Homecoming's online store followed on April 21, with a SNKRS drop for select regions on April 23.
