Full Review

The Cotopaxi Abierto 26L Daypack is a do-it-all bag that doesn’t try too hard to be one thing. It’s positioned as a daypack, but with 26 liters of space and a flexible layout, it can easily stretch into travel, commuting, or even light outdoor use. Whether you’re heading to work, packing for a weekend trip, or just running around the city, it aims to cover all the bases.

After testing, that versatility becomes the main story. It doesn’t overly specialize in any one category, but it handles a wide range of use cases pretty well. It’s the kind of pack you grab when you don’t want to think too hard about which bag to bring. Not perfect for everything, but capable of a lot.

External Components

The Abierto is constructed from 100% recycled polyester, striking a nice balance between durability and weight. It feels tough enough for daily use without being overly heavy or rigid. It holds its own in light rain, but it’s not the most water-resistant pack we’ve tested. If things really start coming down, you’ll want to find some cover.

Hardware is solid across the board. You’ve got YKK zippers, which are about as reliable as it gets—smooth, durable, and easy to use. We have no concerns about long-term performance here. The buckles and hardware come from Woojin and Duraflex, both reputable brands, and everything works exactly as expected.

One of the more eye-catching features is the exterior bungee system on the front. It spans a large portion of the pack and is surprisingly functional. You can stash a jacket, bike helmet, or other bulky gear here, and there’s enough adjustability to keep it secure. It also adds a slightly sportier look to the bag, which we dig.

On the sides, you’ll find dual mesh water bottle pockets. They’re flexible and easy to use, with enough room to handle larger bottles, like 32-ounce Nalgenes. Smaller bottles can feel a bit loose, especially if the main compartment isn’t packed out, but once the bag has some structure, they stay put much better.

Up top, there’s a grab handle. It’s simple—no padding or aeration—but it’s comfortable enough for short carries and stays out of the way when you’re not using it. If you’re hauling the bag around by the handle all day, it might dig in a bit, but realistically, this is a backpack—you’ll probably wear it most of the time anyway.

Fit Notes

The Abierto’s harness system is comfortable and fairly adaptable. The shoulder straps don’t have much curvature out of the box, but they conform to your body over time. The padding is dense without being overly stiff, and the mesh does a solid job of keeping things breathable during longer carries.

The back panel follows a similar formula. It’s well-padded with the same dense foam and breathable mesh, which helps with comfort across different use cases. However, it’s not the most structured panel, and what you pack inside plays a big role in how it feels. A laptop adds rigidity, while softer items like clothing create a more flexible carry. Interestingly, it can feel more comfortable when packed with softer gear, but even with a typical laptop loadout, it holds up well.

There’s also a sternum strap included, which isn’t something you always see on a pack like this. It runs on a rail system split into two sections, allowing you to adjust it to your height and torso. It can shift slightly during use, but it’s easy to reposition. If you don’t need it, you can remove it entirely, but we like having the option, especially with the bag fully loaded.

Overall, it’s a comfortable carry. Like most packs, your experience will depend on how you pack it, but it handles a variety of loads without much issue.

Inside The Pack

At the top of the pack, there’s a large quick-access pocket that offers more space than you might expect. It’s roomy enough for bulkier items like over-ear headphones or a packable jacket. Inside, there’s a smaller zippered pocket with soft lining, ideal for sunglasses or electronic devices. It’s not heavily padded, though, so you’ll still want to be a bit careful with more fragile gear.

The laptop compartment is accessible both externally and through the main compartment. The external zipper provides direct access to a padded sleeve that fits up to a 15-inch laptop. Internally, you slide your device in from the top. There’s a bit of a quirk here—if you leave the external zipper open and load your laptop through the main compartment, there’s technically a chance it could slip out the side. It’s unlikely, but if you’re worried, it’s best to stick to using one access point at a time.

The main compartment is fairly open, with minimal built-in organization. Along the back wall, there’s a large pocket with an elastic top, along with four smaller pockets for things like pens or a stylus. That’s about it—there’s no overly complex admin panel or hidden compartments here.

You’ll also find that the laptop sleeve can double as a hydration sleeve, complete with a hanger loop and pass-through. There are loops on the shoulder straps to help route and secure a hose, which is a nice touch for anyone taking this bag on a hike or longer outdoor outing.

Beyond that, the space is yours to use how you see fit. It works well with packing cubes, pouches, or even a camera cube if you want to turn it into a photography setup. The lack of heavy organization might be a downside for some, but it adds to the bag’s versatility.

Cotopaxi Abierto 26L Daypack | The pack is versatile.

Overall, the Abierto 26L Daypack is a well-rounded option that’s built to handle a little bit of everything. It’s durable enough for everyday life, adaptable enough for travel, and simple enough to stay out of your way. If you’re looking for one bag that can flex between multiple roles without excelling at just one, this is a solid choice.
